These are 4 technical questions candidates reported being asked in C3 AI interviews for AI engineer, ML engineer and applied AI engineer roles, each with a model answer you can say out loud in a minute or two. They cover training, embeddings and rag: 2 junior, 1 mid-level and 1 senior questions. Every question comes from a public interview write-up that names C3 AI.Updated
C3 AI embeddings questions
Model answer
In high dimensions data gets sparse and distances concentrate, so models need far more data. PCA finds the linear projection that keeps the most variance: fast, deterministic, and easy to size from explained variance. An autoencoder learns a nonlinear encoder and decoder by minimising reconstruction error. A linear autoencoder with squared loss spans the same subspace as PCA, so it only wins on nonlinear structure with enough data. Judge them on the downstream task, not reconstruction: train the same model on each representation, sweep the dimension, and compare held-out accuracy and stability across seeds.
C3 AI retrieval-augmented generation questions
Model answer
Sparse retrieval like BM25 matches tokens, so its tokenization matters: words with stemming suit English prose, while code, part numbers and other languages need subwords or character n-grams. Dense retrieval embeds meaning, so it catches paraphrases but misses rare exact strings. A hybrid fuses both rankings, say with reciprocal rank fusion, then reranks the top. Evaluate on labelled queries with recall at k and NDCG, broken down by query type, against each retriever alone.

- Search your own documents for passages related to the question, with keywords, embeddings or both.
- A reranker reads the question with each candidate and keeps the few that actually answer it.
- The kept passages go into the prompt, with instructions to answer only from them.
- The model answers from evidence in its context instead of memory alone, so the answer can be checked against its sources.

C3 AI training and optimisation questions
Model answer
A higher learning rate. It scales every update equally, so early layers stay starved while late ones turn unstable. The others attack the cause: skip connections give gradients a direct path, ReLU has slope one when active instead of saturating, and batch normalization keeps activations in a healthy range.
Model answer
Boosting adds weak learners in sequence, each fixing current mistakes. For labels plus or minus one, the margin is label times ensemble score: positive means correct. AdaBoost minimises the exponential loss of the margin, a smooth surrogate for 0-1 error. Large training margins tighten generalization bounds but don't guarantee test accuracy, especially with noisy labels.
